WELLS — There's a new charter boat option in Wells these days — for fishermen and ocean going tourists alike.
Reel Brothers Charters, owned by real brothers Dennis and Tim Legere, have set up shop in Wells Harbor, offering half-day and full-day fishing charters and half-day scenic tours of the coast.
"This is a new venture for us," Dennis Legere said. "I got my Captain's license and am also certified as a saltwater guide. It seemed like the right fit for us."
The Legeres have been on the water one way or another for many years, 30 years in Wells.
"We've lived on the seacoast all our lives," Dennis Legere said. "We spent our summers on York Beach and went deep sea fishing as kids. We've been here 14 seasons and fished recreationally."
The Legeres' boat was custom built in 2010 for an owner on Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. That owner put the boat on the market and the Legeres' were immediately interested.
"We went down to see it in a boatyard in the southernmost part of the Chesapeake Bay," said Dennis Legere. "We fell in love with it. We went back in April and did a sea trial and then had it trucked up here. We made it into a charter fishing boat, rigged it out, and now it's up and running."
The 32-foot-long boat is licensed for six passengers and features an extended canopy that allows customers to have shelter during the charter. There's a private bathroom and safety equipment on board.
The brothers named the boat "Doris Marie" for their mother.
"She's 84, lives in Florida, and still works cutting hair a couple days a week," Tim Legere said. "She's had a (beautician's) license for almost 70 years."
The Legeres offer half day charters along the coast, fishing for stripers, ,mackerel and bluefish ($350) and full day charters off shore ($750).
A full day shark or tuna fishing charter is ($825) and they also offer three hour scenic tours for ($300).
Passengers are advised to bring food and beverages, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, and extra clothing.
"We know the area pretty well," said Dennis Legere. "We like it here. Everyone (at the harbor) is friendly. People work together and help each other out."
The brothers are not lacking in confidence either, as their motto is "we go out catching, not fishing."
